Bears in the News

On October 13, 2020 at the Seneca County Board of Supervisors meeting held in Ovid, NY at Papa Bear Dan Motill was recognized for his efforts.

In the early 2000s Dan Motill moved to Seneca County and took on the challenge to protect and restore the Three Bears.  Dan felt that the history of the buildings and the architecture were too important to Seneca County and the people of the Village of Ovid to let them deteriorate.  He used his qualities of determination leadership, love of history and artistic talent that was expressed through his paintings to save the Three Bears.

Through Dan’s dedication and leadership, the Friends of the Three Bears were formed and through hard work, dedication, grants, memberships and generous donation were able to provide over $1 million dollars to support restoration.

In recognition, The Seneca County Board of Supervisors established the Dan Motill Room at Papa Bear.

Fall Bulb Sale at the Three Bears

OVID, N.Y. –  This year, the Friends of the Three Bears have changed their plans, and will not be having their traditional Mother’s Day plant sale in May. With current construction in Papa Bear, there would not be access to facilities for sale attendees. The plant sale will return in 2026! However, there is no need to worry, you can still get your flower fix through them, as they are partnering with Dutch Mill Bulbs to do a Fall Bulb Sale! Dutch Mill provides a wide variety of bulbs including daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinth, iris, and more. This sale will start in June and run through September, with the bulbs being delivered to you in time to get them in the ground before it freezes this winter. That way, you will have beautiful new flowers come next Spring. Beginning in June, the Friends of the Three Bears will have brochures with order forms available to pick up at Mama Bear during open hours from 12 to 2pm Thursday- Sunday, and at all of their art classes and concerts. They will also post ordering information on their website and social media, so sales can be completed remotely as well.

All funds collected through this bulb sale will be used to ensure the Three Bears are able to continue offering free art, history, and music programming to the community members in Seneca County. If you have any questions regarding the bulb sale or the lack of their traditional plant sale, please feel free to email threebearsovid@gmail.com

The Epic of Finn MacCool at The Three Bears

OVID, N.Y. – Once again, the Ovid Courthouse in the refurbished Papa Bear building will be filled with beautiful music and intriguing stories, as professional storyteller Jay Leeming joins us with a tale so compelling that you will be holding your breath for the outcome. Prepare for a tale of whimsy and magic.

The stories of the Irish hero Finn MacCool invite us into a dazzling wilderness of wizards, goddesses, and fire-breathing monsters in which Finn and his band of warriors must defend Ireland not only with their swords but with the arts of poetry and magic. These stories awaken us to the larger universe in which we dwell, where mythic action makes the land and even the briefest moment can be a doorway into worlds unknown.

This story-cycle will be presented in two parts, on November 8th and 15th from 7:00 to 8:30pm, though each half of the cycle may be enjoyed independently of the other. Attend as a series, or enjoy one-night of the tale. Storytelling is an art form, a tradition as old as humankind, and we hope you will join us to be part of that tradition.

This all-ages program is free, though seating is limited, so registration is required. Please email threebearsovid@gmail.com to request a registration form.
